Fainting goats? Is this a joke?

Obviously not. Fainting goats are a slightly smaller than standard breeds of goat. Their muscles freeze for about 10 seconds when they are startled. It caused by a hereditary genetic disorder called myotonia condenita.

As strange as this may sound, fainting goats actually have served an historical purpose. When wolves would come down from the hills to attack a flock of sheep, the goats would become startled and they would faint. The sheep would make a clean getaway, as the wolves would pay attention on the stunned goats rather than the sheep. That's why shepherds often kept the goats with their sheep in case of some predator attacks.
